Palawan, a narrow archipelago of more than 1,780 islands and islets on the western border of the Philippines, is a vast reserve of natural beauty and zoological wonders, a stunning haven of flora and fauna. The Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park (PPSRNP) also known as Puerto Princesa Underground River is one of the most biologically diverse conservation areas of the Philippines. It was established primarily to protect the outstanding natural properties. It features spectacular limestone formations, lush old growth tropical forest, interesting wildlife, pristine white sand beaches and one of the most impressive cave systems in the world. The PPSRNP is designated a core area for the Palawan Biosphere Reserve. In recognition of its globally significant natural properties, it was inscribed to the List of World Heritage Sites. The main focus of the PPSRNP is an 8.2 km long underground river that is navigable up to 4.3 km. It is reputed to be the longest navigable underground river in the World.
